  • 1 Megabyte = 8 Megabits

Abbreviations Used in Data Transfer

  • KB = Kilobytes (note the capital B) Refers to data size for storage.
  • MB = Megabytes (note the capital B) Refers to data size for storage.
  • Kb = Kilobits (note the lowercase b) refers to data transfer rates, also displayed as Kbps (Kilobits per second).

    For example traditional dialup service is displayed as 56K or Kb, likewise DSL might show 768Kb DSL.

  • Mb = Megabits (note the lowercase b) refers to data transfer rates also displayed as Mbps (Megabits per second).

    For example 1.5Mb DSL can also be displayed as 1500 Kb or Kilobits. 6 Megabit High Speed cable service is frequently shown 6 Mbps or 6 Mb or in the smaller unit of measurement as 6000 Kb, Kbps or Kilobits.
